Ideally, a cover letter must complement a resume. A cover letter plays a very significant role in a job hunt. In most cases, a cover letter is required by jobless candidates to get a job. However, a vacancy exists within the organization and all the employees are informed regarding the same via email or internal job portals. Candidates need to follow certain guidelines while writing a cover letter for internal job postings.

Any organization is committed to facilitate its employees to reach their professional goals through internal promotion and transfer opportunities. Internal job postings are a vital source of assisting employees to upgrade themselves and increase their chances of expanding their knowledge, skill and expertise. Internal job postings can be both vertical and horizontal in the organization. The candidate must first ensure that he possesses all the required skills and is apt for the post. The candidate must then fill up the internal job application form furnished by the human resource department.

A candidate must specify the post applied for and address the letter to the concerned superior. The first paragraph must include the employee’s present work profile and job designation. If possible, he must include references from his current superiors who can vouch for his abilities.  He must then emphasize the fact that he meets all the expectations of the new opening and has all the qualifications to support it. He must highlight any new skills that he recently acquired, which the employer is not aware of. After completing the letter, the candidate must then submit it along with the application form to the concerned department.

The cover letter must ideally contain short paragraphs to avoid boredom. Besides, smaller paragraphs and small sentences ensure better comprehension. The letter must be printed on a standard size paper and should be free of any grammatical errors. A good cover letter always creates a good impression of the candidate in the eyes of the reader. Often, a bad cover letter ruins the possibility of getting a job. A cover letter is like a mirror that reflects the personality of the candidate to a certain extent.
